What is Osaka Municipal Boat?

In Osaka City, there are eight routes of municipal ferry that connect rivers both sides across the river. This time I would like to use the share cycle to board all eight routes. The reason why many ferry boats remain in Osaka is also described in Wikipedia.

In the southwestern part of Osaka City, waterways such as rivers and canals run complicatedly, and river transportation has been so active that it is difficult to build the bridges, many public ferry boats have been operated by the city since ancient times. Most of them were abolished due to the newly-built bridges, but even now, 8 routes are mainly operated by Osaka City Construction Bureau West Area Management Office.

As a spot where you can touch Osaka in everyday wear, which you can't see in downtown areas and sightseeing spots, it has gained a quiet popularity. Recently, signboards for ferry boats (pictures on the side of the hull and the board) are displayed and signs for the boarding (front of the hull and a picture of a waterfowl flying).

Many large bridges are built for cars in the Gulf of Osaka, but there are many tall bridges considering the ships sailing on rivers and canals.

Some of these are inconvenient for citizens to cross on foot or by bicycle, and even after the bridges have been built, people still wish to use the boats as their daily feet.

The ferry service is free on all routes. Bicycles can be loaded, but bikes above the moped cannot be loaded.

The timetable of the ferry is like this. All routes are on A4 PDF files. By the way, this is the departure time, and the departure time on the opposite bank is a few minutes after this. Each route has a short boarding time, and in some cases, one minute after boarding, you will be on the opposite bank.

Tenpozan Ferry Boat

The starting point was Nishi-Kujo Station, which was a transfer station for JR Osaka Loop Line and Hanshin ERailway. The JR Sakurajima Line going to Universal Studios also departs from here.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220026j:plain

I lend a share cycle at the cycle port near the station. The HUBchari that I used this time is free to get on and off at 150 ports around Osaka city. I think that the electric bicycle with a small diameter wheel was not bad in terms of design. It's not too embarrassing to ride.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206215747j:plain

For a while, I rode a bike in a downtown area of Konohana Ward. The elevated road you can see is the main road between Osaka and Kobe, national road No.43.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206215824j:plain

I passed by the side of Universal Studios. The foreign group was just taking a commemorative photo.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220043j:plain

When I arrived at the pier, the ship just came from the opposite bank. On the opposite bank is Tempozan, which has a sightseeing spot such as Kaiyukan. It is a route that is relatively far from the other side of the 8 routes.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220100j:plain

There were people on the ship. A large percentage of passengers are foreigners (Westerners). It seemed to be the commute of the actors working at Universal Studios.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220131j:plain

There was no chair in the boat.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220208j:plain

These are Kaiyukan and Tempozan Ferris wheel. You can see the WTC building in the back. It was the coldest day in this winter, but fine and sunny. The boat crossed Aji River.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220249j:plain

The capacity was 80 passengers.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220320j:plain

There was a bridge over the route. But this is the Hanshin Expressway No. 5 Wangan Line, where people and bicycles cannot pass.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220338j:plain

I arrived at Tenpozan.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220413j:plain

I move to the pier of Jinbei ferry boat by bike. The bridge over the Tenpozan canal is Port Ohashi bride, which was built 1974.

Jinbei Ferry Boat

The Jinbe ferry boat is still in use, connecting Izumio 7-chome, Taisho-ku and Fukusaki 1-chome, Minato-ku (94 meters between quays), and two ships operating during the morning rush hour. An average of about 1,096 people are using it every day.

Jinbe ferry boat is the most popular route among the 8 routes. Since there is a high school nearby. It seems to be crowded with students going to school in the morning and evening.  It seemed you can swim across the canal, if you are good at swimming.  Here as well,  the boat was just about to leave when I arrived the pier, I hurried up to board.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220450j:plain

I saw the arch-shaped Shirinashigawa sluice. Its shape considers the navigation of the ship.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220508j:plain

The ship made an arc through the narrow Shirinashi River. At the end, the ship docked on the pier sliding sideways like a drifting car. It was a good time for the captain show his skill. It took about 1 minute during this ride.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220525j:plain

It is the Izumio side of Taisho Ward of Jinbe ferry. 7 routes out of 8, excluding Tempozan route, are between Taisho ward and other wards or between Taisho ward and Taisho ward. Taisho ward itself is like an island.

 Titose Ferry Boat

I will quote about Chitose ferry from the Osaka City's website.

This ferry boat route is operated as part of the Osaka Port reconstruction project, when the construction of inland port in the Taisho Ward  was carried out, the old Chitose Bridge was removed, and the ferry route was established as a replacement facility.

It operates between Tsurumachi 3-chome, Taisho-ku and Kita Enkajima 2-chome (371 meters between quays). As of 2018, about 530 people used it every day on average.

There is a ferry dock under the Chitose Bridge, which you can see at the end of the road.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220709j:plain

This is the municipal ferry's common symbol mark. It was painted in on the concrete embankment wall.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220616j:plain

The ferry boat went under the New Chitose bridge.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220725j:plain

I thought this Chitose route has the best view.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220649j:plain

I arrived on the Tsurumachi side of the opposite bank.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220827j:plain

Looking back, Chitose Bridge was a bridge that was accessible by foot. However, walking or cycling on this huge bridge may only be for those who want to exercise. That's why there are still ferry boats left.

I was interested in the bridge, so I would go to the top of the bridge. I climbed the stairs holding my heavy electric bike.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220844j:plain

There was a wide sidewalk.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220902j:plain

The height of the bridge is 27 m above sea level. It's about a 10-story building. The magnificent view spreads out.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220917j:plain

You can see Abeno Harukas, the tallest skyscraper in Japan.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220933j:plain

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206220948j:plain

This is the west side view.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206221137j:plain

Namihaya Ohashi bridge, which is visible in front of Minato Ohashi Bridge, also has a sidewalk. It might be interesting to cycle around the bridges in Osaka bay area next time.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206221200j:plain

This is the Kita-Okajima side of the Chitose ferry. In the distance, there are high-rise buildings in Honmachi.

 Launch at IKEA

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206221248j:plain

If you ride a bicycle for a while, you will find IKEA. I decided to have a break and lunch here.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206221306j:plain

I left my backpack in the free coin locker.

f:id:tamikiti67:20200206221338j:plain

I had lunch at the restaurant on the 2nd floor. It's a weekday so it's not too crowded.
