Exciting Mochi-Throwing Festival in Kariya

Motokariya Shrine

On Saturday, October 5, I went to the Moto Kariya Shrine in Kariya city to see the regular mochi throwing. I will report it.

※mochi=rice cake

What is Moto-Kariya Shrine?

Motokariya Shrine is located in the western part of Kariya city. a It is a 10-minute walk from Kariyashi Station on the Meitetsu Mikawa Line.

The Venue in Elementary Schoolyard

The votive rice cakes are thrown at the annual festival at Motokariya Shrine, but the venue is too small and dangerous inside the shrine grounds, so the event would be hold in the schoolyard of the Koromoura Elementary School adjacent to the shrine every year. This rice cake throwing festival is the largest scale in the area, and many people gather from inside and outside the city. Isn't it about 2,000 to 3,000?

When throwing rice cakes, 42 years old men sprinkles rice cakes from the top of tower. Many people are waiting under the turret to get them.

※42 years old = one of the critical age for men

On that day, the main event was supposed to start at 3 pm, however when I arrived there at 3:30 pm, it had already finished.

Very Gorgeous Gifts

Every Mochi is wrapped in a plastic, and some of them have a winning lottery with a winning number.

I saw the 42-year-old category's mochi throwing prize list. Luxury travel tickets, 55-inch 4K TV, Dyson fans, i-robot Rumba, and other prizes were lined up. How much was a luxury travel ticket worth, tens of thousands of yen?  In the past, it seems that there was a trip to Hawaii as a prize.

This was a prize list given by a 25-year-old man of critical age. Nintendo Switch, iPod Touch, etc. were also pretty luxurious.

The mochi throwing prize seems to be used by the men of the critical year who belong to the critical year party, and the money accumulated for many years for this day is used. There seems to be a considerable financial burden, but for men, holding mochi throwing is also a ritual.

Throwing mochi was over, but there was a long line for redeeming the prizes. What you can see in front ws a 55-inch TV and a Dyson fan. The men of critical years operate the festival.

Notes on participating in mochi throwing

Bringing some dangerous items such as umbrellas, canes and baby cars are not allowed in the mochi throwing venue. In addition, the host are not responsible for any accidents or injuries caused by throwing rice cakes. It is at your own risk.

The Mochi-throwing festival has areas for infants aged 3 and over and areas for elementary school students, which are separate from the adult area.

Annual festival of the Shrine

The Autumn festival was held at the shrine, and there were stalls in the shrine yard, which were also crowded with many people.

There were some colorful floats decorated with paper flowers.

The floats were crossing the intersection.

On the right hand side of this intersection, many floats and many festival participants were waiting, so it was impossible to enter by bicycle. In addition, there were many illegal parkings in the neighborhood and it was chaotic.

Although the information of throwing mochi at Honkariya Shrine is not available on the Internet. However, it seems to be the first Sunday of every October.

Since the area around Motokariya Shrine is small and there is no parking lot, I think it is better to access by public transportation. The festival is basically a local festival and not for tourists, so we would like to participate so as not to bother local residents.
